Check this out, from tonight. Biggest herd of Elk I've ever seen, outside of a refuge. Simply breathtaking to see it in real life. The three sets of pictures here are all of unique groups of elk. They looked like ants marching all over the mountain side.
Originally, I was photographing the bull, and I had slowly moved up the mountain, to try and get within a couple hundred yards. He let me photograph him from a distance for a few minutes, but eventually he turned and walked over a small ridge into a gully. Not a few moments later, that huge herd starting climbing out of the hidden gully, to my complete surprise. I had no idea they were there. I then noticed the other two groups even farther down the mountain side. Unbelievable! Make sure you check out the high resolution version.

When Elk season starts back up you know where to go :rifle: J/K
I'm jealous, truly. :hail2thechief:
The only time I have ever been very close to a large elk herd on top of Cedar Mountain I did not have a camera with me to document it. Wish I had.
Edit: I should add it was a wild hear, and drove upon them by accident, they stood by. I watched from feet away, then they took off it seamed like hundreds of them. |
