Beware the goathead thorns in and around the Amassa Back Trail parking lot. There are zillions of them in the gravel, we all got flats. :?

:frustrated: sounds like *someone* planted them..they werent there before. SO did you find this out at the bottom of the hill to the creek or on the climb?

I didn't see them in my tires until I put my bike on the vehicle rack. We actually climbed Amassa Back all the way to the overlook then, following some bad advice, took the Jackson Hole Trail (from hell) back down. We rode for a short distance along the Colorado, crossed some water and rode through some greenery to the parking lot. I never heard of these things so I wasn't looking. I had so many in my tires that I just threw them away and bought new ones. A bunch of the guys said they noticed (too late) the thorns laying among the gravel of the lot and thought they may have come from ATV and vehicle tires. I don't know for sure but I think from the number that I had, I had to have ridden over or near the plants. BTW we parked at the large lower lot and climbed up to the other on the road. Several of the guys had flats as soon as they left the lot and some riding that road. I got my thorns at the end somewhere between the water crossing and the lot.

Yes, probably picked up the thorns from the lower area. Ive found similar thorns in and around town but never on trail, course Ive never ridden up to Amassa Back from lower Kane Creek Blvd. road...usually too much traffic when I go :haha: That said, Amassa Back is one of my most favorite trails. A good climb up the shelfs, an awesome view, some slickrock, and a killer downhill bomb back! :2thumbs:

I agree, the climb up was a real tech workout and view was beautiful. Unfortunately we didn't get to experience the downhill return due to letting an insane individual lead the ride back. :lol8: Maybe next time I'll get to do it right.
