Here are the best of the group of my first lightpainting attempts. I choose my old marine corp dress blues and my current army class A jacket. I should have used a black backdrop but dont have access to one right now and was just playing around.
These were shot with 8 sec shutter speed, 0.0 exposure comp, ISO80 and the camera chose the apature.

Did you just open the shutter in the dark and flashed a flash light on it?

Looks pretty neato

Yes. I used a closet so I had some lighting on the back wall. I wish I had some black sheets and a room that I could get dark enough and longer shutter speed(the 8 second limit is killing me) they would come out better. I am also playing with regular white light bulbs with fliters and LED light.

I plan on taking this experiment to the outdoors in the next few days and have the pics up.

I showed my students how to paint with light this summer, not so much because it's a commonly-used technique, but because it showed them how image sensors work at long shutter speeds. There were lots of ooos and aaahs when we did it. That's me seated in the middle, by the way.

Yes there usually is that normal "Oh Wow!" effect. If I had a longer shutter speed(more than 8 secs) I think I would have had some stellar shots last night. I went out on a hunch and think I might have better luck with a flash light or two. Ill show my work here when I finally get it right.

Lightpainting is a great technique, and can yield some awesome images, especially on still life subjects. Try varying the location of your light during the exposure, and it can make a very soft light source that is very pleasing.

One of my favorites things is long exposures with a couple speedlights, gelled with different colors. In this example I strobed 12 times from one side with a red gel, and 8 from the other with a blue gel, to match the sky colors and fill in the foreground. Lots of cool possibilities.

here's my take on playing with light:

settings: camera on bulb mode (8mm fisheye @ 1.6 crop)... single frame shot. strobe is handheld 1/16th power fired @ 12hz (fired approximately 11 times)... this is not a composite shot btw...

Very cool. I like that you can see the stars as well... Good idea.
