Just in case anyone might be interested:

If anyone is interested in some fairly high altitude peaks, I am leading a trip to Peru in November. If anyone from 14ers.com wanted, they would be welcome to come. I imagine total cost including airfare out of Denver or SLC will be in the $1400 range.

We will be doing a long llama supported trek through the Colca Canyon followed by an attempt of Ubinas (5672 meters/18609 feet) and Pichu Pichu (5664 meters/18583 feet).

Colca Canyon is over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and has interesting cultures in it. There are lots of Inca Ruins scattered about.

The peaks are non-technical, but very interesting volcanoes in the desert. Pichu Pichu was climbed by the Incas and they left ruins on the mountain, plus used to sacrifice kids up there. Ubinas is very active, but can still be climbed and approached.

This will be my 8th trip to South America, so I generally know how to get along and around down there. I'll be happy to organize everything. The only catch is that I'm bringing my son and am hoping a few more adults will come along for safety (if not, we'll just get a guide for all of it). We'll have to go slow for acclimatization anyway, so it won't be a burden.

When are you expecting commitment? I'd definitely like to go, and I speak espanish and can get around in SA pretty well. I just don't know exactly where my life will take me in the next 6 months.

I will be there only two weeks, November 10-24, but anyone who wants could leave earlier or stay later.

I would truely love to do this. I'll have to see though. I've thought many times about doing something like this. Finances would be the major issue but maybe I could swing it.

There are many possibilities, but here is one possibility.

November 11 (morning)

We all meet in Arequipa at a chosen hotel or hostel (there are actually many fairly nice hostels to stay at for $5 a night-Peru is cheap!).

The rest of the day can be spent shopping, packing, visiting the city sites, or whatever.

November 12-21

Colca Canyon: Colca Canyon is one of the two deepest canyons in the Western Hemisphere and is 11,500 feet deep and filled with both ancient ruins and many interesting cultures that live in the bottom of the canyon. There are also many high waterfalls and hot springs in the canyon.

No roads penetrate the canyon’s bottom, but many people live there in small villages. Llamas or mules will carry the gear and part of the time will be spent camping and part in the villages.

November 12

Travel to Chivay (11,815 ft) and Cabanaconde (10,600 ft). Visit Mirador of the Cruz of the Condor (12,500 ft).

November 13

Hike into the canyon to the village of Llahuar (6950 ft) with hot springs.

November 14

Hike to the villages of Llatica (8000 ft) and Fure (9050 ft), visiting Inca ruins along the way.

November 15

Visit the high waterfalls of Huaruro (9400 ft) and Tocallo and hike to Sangalle (7300 ft)

November 16

Return to Cabaconde (10,600 ft)

November 17

Travel by bus to Llanca (10,150 ft), Hike into the canyon to the Rio Colca (6500 ft) and hike up to the village of Choco (8117 ft). Visit ruins and the village.

November 18

Hike to Miña (11,650 ft)

November 19

Hike to the Chila Mountain and camp at 15,100 ft.

November 20

Hike over the pass (17,400 ft) near the mountains of Casiri and Cerani and descend to the village of Chachas (10,000 ft).

November 21

Visit the Valley of the Volcanoes and hike to the village of Andagua (11,800 ft) and take the bus back to Arequipa.

November 22-23

Climb either Ubinas (18,619 ft) or Pichu Pichu (18,590 ft)

Ubinas is an active volcano, but supposedly safe to view and climb. Pichu Pichu is a seven summitted volcano with inca ruins both on the slopes and at the summit.

Looks like cost will be around $400-500 plus airfare.
