Hey everybody. My name's Jason and I'm a newbie here. I was wondering if any of you have by chance hiked in Great Basin, and of those who have, who made it to the top of Wheeler Peak? "Normally" how long till enough snow is melted off for most people to make it without cramp-ons? Or are they always required pretty much?

Personally I've always wanted to get out that way, but haven't yet. Sorry... :ne_nau:

How high is Wheeler Peak?

I think it is a "tad" over 13,000 if I am not mistaken. I heard it is great, and not too crowded.

Probably still snowy in patches if it’s over 13,000 feet, but not impassable. I've heard the peak is exposed enough that the snow is usually off by mid-summer.

I’ve heard it’s real popular with Boy Scouts, and that the trail is really well defined all the way to the summit.

Go for it!

I heard that there is camping around 9000 feet there. I'm sure there still is snow, but as you stated, I think it is exposed enough to allow passage to the peak. I plan on doing it, just don't know when. Still recovering (money-wise) from my Laguna Seca trip a couple of weeks ago.

It is more appealing to me than say, Mt Whitney, because it is said to be way less crowded.

I wish that is why I was broke...those damn :assault: hotel owners jacked up their rates SKY-HIGH for the race and screwed us :bootyshake: big time. That's what I get for letting my brother's chick plan the thing...next time will be different!
