After a few postponements we finally made in down to the Swell last weekend. Had to work Friday the 9th so we left after work and finally set up a tent at about 1:am near the Ding and Dang trailhead.
Our group consisted of myself, my little brother Quinten, his roommate Matt, my brother-in-law Rici and an army buddy of mine; Chris. Matt has a nice 4 door truck so we split gas (more that one meaning there) and all rode together.
Due to the late night and the fact that no one even brought an alarm clock we got out of bed at around 9:am Saturday morning and hit the trail by about 10:am. Really, who want to get up early on a Saturday anyway?
No water in Ding at all and as you will see in the pictures; no water in Dang either. We went up Ding and near the top of the canyon climbed around for awhile on the slopes and rocks.
After hiking over to the top of Dang we stopped for lunch and continued down Dang. Our whole group has hiking experience but not real climbing or canyoneer type skills, but Dang proved to be no real challenge and loads of fun.

The unanimous agreement was that Crack on Sunday was the better hike. Again, a bit of a late start, we got up Sunday morning, breakfasted, broke camp and drove around the reef to the top of Crack canyon and hit the trail by about 10:30 am.
Right away it was clear there would be water in the canyon but as we entered the canyon we were surprised to find ice! (See pictures). The ice didn’t last too long, a couple hundred meters but it was fun while it lasted. It was quite thick, Quinten broke through it once, but only because he found what looked like a thin spot and jumped on it.
After the ice we hiked through mud a couple miles down canyon before turning back the way we came to get to the truck and home in time to watch the Simpsons.

Edit: Forgot to mention the weather. Saturday was perfect; tee shirt weather while in the canyon. It did sprinkle a little Saturday evening, but it was light and lasted only a few minutes. Sunday was colder, jackets required though most of the canyon. With light sprinkles off and on throughout the day.
