I am a married man with kids and as such I find that my recreational time is limited. So I plan a"Power Weekend" when ever possible which is to say that I try to pack as much adventure into a single 2 day weekend as possible. Last year we went to Zions for a day and ran "Pine Creek" and "Keyhole" and made it home for dinner. It is not the ideal way to experience either of those canyons but some sacrifices have to be made in order to get my regular fix of earth worship. Anyway the reason for this post is to find out if anyone else knows of some good canyoneering that I could cram into a "Power Weekend" preferably some technical stuff. Thanks. :hail2thechief:

I honestly can not give you an canyoneering advice, but I just want to commend a fellow power weekend guy. That is how a lot of my trips are. Good luck on your weekend.

I would guess the majority of people on this site are power weekenders. North Wash is ideal this time of year for power weekends. Many canyons are close to pavement, meaning the drive isn't too bad (about 4 hours from SLC) and the canyons are short, you can do one in a few hours, two makes a great day (you can cram in three in the summer, but unless you move quick, three can be a lot with limited daylight).

Have you done anything in North Wash? Quite a bit different than Zion, much tighter narrows and will rip your clothes and gear to shreds, but boy is it fun. The best canyons in the area are in my opinion Shenanigans (VERY tight, big guys wont fit) Trail (second tight spot is as tight as Shenanigans, but for much less time, big guys go high... like 40 feet off the deck high) and Middle Leprechaun (also very tight, big guys go high and get a work out). These can all be pretty serious canyons so depending on your experience level, I would do stuff like Right and Left Leprechaun, Blarney, Maidenwater, Monkey Business, etc... first, then you can hit the three mentioned above.

What he said. :nod: I also liked Foolin' Around with Right fork of Leprechaun combo meal. Little easier for most folks and not nearly as tight. I loved Trail. I am a power weekender also. That is all I do any more. With spring around the corner, the Roost and Swell will be in season very soon which will add more options.

hi, power weekend eh?

personally, i think the best choice is the two night weekend trip ... getting out of town friday afternoon, camping friday night and saturday night, and getting two full days of canyoneering in. with a 4-5 hour drive from lehi to most destinations in northwash, the roost, or the swell, it's very easy to do that, even leaving late on a friday.

what kind of canyoneering are you interested in doing? eric and scott card have pointed you towards the north wash area. many of these slots are tight and pretty athletic, with the stemming and climbing ... ideal if that's your cup of tea.

there is some less athletic stuff in the swell and the roost that's good, though there's some to be had there as well.

while in some places there are bolts, in all of these areas the ethic is about natural anchors, which usually are in place, but always need to be inspected and replaced/reconstructed when necessary.

there are some great slots you can do in two days in all of these areas.
what have you done outside of zion? what are you interested in doing.
with more details specific suggestions can be made.
also, did you have any specific time of year in mind?

Every weekend is a power weekend for me :2thumbs:

I live for the down Friday night and back Sunday night trip. I believe just about every route posted on http://www.Climb-Utah.com is doable in this manner.
