HURRICANE — The Kolob Fire, which ignited early Sunday, exploded overnight, burning nearly 14,000 acres. It has now been classified as a Type 2 fire.
Strong gusts and warm temperatures aided the rapid spread of the fire, which is currently burning in the direction of Rockville. So far, the blaze has claimed several outbuildings, but no residences.
According to fire officials, the blaze is burning between the upper portion of Kolod Road and state Route 9, which is being used as a fire break. The highway is open for the time being, but travelers should expect intermittent closures.
The Great Basin Incident Management team, made up of federal, state, county and city firefighters, took over responsibility for fighting the fire at 6 a.m. today. The Hurricane airport is being used as a base for Helitac operations with heavy tanker planes from Cedar City and single-engine air tankers flying from a variety of sites.
“Fuel conditions are pretty dry and the fire made some pretty big runs Sunday night,” Jerry Bruner, incident commander, said.
“The best-case scenario is containment within a week,” said Tom Haraden, public information officer for Zion National Park. |
