So I want to buy a dog and I've been looking at the Rhodesian Ridgeback. My aunt breeds them so I thought she could help me out with getting them. Has anyone owned/known one? All I know about them is what I can find on the internet. Cool dogs though. Bred to fight lions.

beautiful dogs. i have a bittersweet relationship with them. an x-girlfriend had one, and he was a very sweet dog. one of the fastest dogs i have seen. superexcited all the time in the woods and loved to play with other dogs.

during a different time, another x-girlfriend who had 2 cats that i fell in love with, sox and pandora, moved into a new house with some friends. when the neighbor saw the cats he came over and said, "uhh, just to let you know, my dog has eaten 7 other cats already....his dog was a rodesian ridgeback. sox i wasn't worried about, he became a very very mellow cat when he got into a major cat fight and got scratched up and lost all of his nails. on the other hand, pandora was one of those curious cats, that liked to explore and get into everything. i am sure she would get into this yard and this dog was a force that she had never come across before. 3 months later, on my birthday no less, i got a phone call saying that pandora was dead. a couple of people were hanging out in the backyard and there was a commotion in the backyard of the neighbor with the dog. one guy hurried over to the fence and saw pandora, hanging with her neck snapped, in the tightly clenched jaws of the rodesian ridgeback.

it was very sad to hear, but i hate to say, i knew it would happen and i told her so. the cat was an outdoor cat and she didn't have the heart to contain it inside...

i think that in general they are fine with other dogs and cats, especially if they grow up with cats. but this one i believe was trained or something. and i had to wonder, why should such a dog be allowed in a city? even if it's in a yard which is completely contained.


anyway like i said, the other dog i knew, was a complete sweetheart and greatly changed my mind about the breed.

Man I would love to have one. I found out about them about 15 years ago. Never could find one. Now there are a few around but they cost thousands and the breeders that I have heard of make you sign a paper stating that you will not breed them.

Man if thoes things eat cats I need one! What about farretts? :haha:

hmm, i wasn't aware of this policy. so, the one that killed pandora was full bred. the one that was a sweetheart, actually, was a mixed breed from Hawaii, it was half rodesian and half, uhh, either golden retriever or lab, i forget. but i did meet another full bred in bend, oregon. seemed like a normal dog, but there was a deceptive calm sense about him, as if it at any moment, he could turn into something quite scary.

in any case they are beautiful dogs and the ridge is just strangely fascinating.

Alright, so I bought one of these dogs. She really wasn't that hard to find and wasn't as expensive as I though. She isn't show quality of couse. 9 weeks old now and she is a pain in the arse cause she wants to eat everything but all the ridgebacks I've ever seen have been nice normal dogs.

That is because only RESPONSIBLE, REPUTABLE breeders care about the future lineage of their dogs. Actually they should make you sign a contract and pay a deposit saying you will spay/neuter your dog, if they already haven't had it done prior to handing him to the new owner.

The reason is that they don't want Joe Schmoe making more puppies from their carefully bred stock, mixing them with Poodles and calling them Ridgepoos or some other stupid lingo, or having accidental litters. They care where their dogs end up, and who knows where Joe Schmoe's puppies will end up. After they are done being cute and all grown up, too many idiots dump off the dogs at shelters. Also too many idiots breed dogs just for money and sell the dogs with no intention of spaying or neutering and thus contributing to the horrid pet overpopulation problem we have in America.

The only reason anyone should be breeding dogs is to IMPROVE THE BREED. That includes OFA and CERF and anyother genetic health screening on all dogs that will be bred. People who breed dogs the right way are lucky to break even.

Any breeder who hands you a puppy with out vet references, or filling out a detailed application, or maybe even a home check is what we call a "backyard breeder." These people are a big contributers to the pet over population problem. Just some FYI.




Now I have some puppy raising books for anyone getting a puppy. Put the time in now every day, and you will have a good dog.

I've got books upon books to read but I do appreciate it. Like I said before, my Aunt breeds them so I have a good resource if I need some help. She gave me the whole interview and talked to me about spaying the dog. I plan on spaying her. I know next to nothing about breeding and don't really want to learn. I will post some more pictures I'm sure. She just needs to grow up and relax a little bit.

When I was younger My uncle had two of these dogs on his property just outside sacramento.
Pretty good temperment from what I recall, but they did require a lot of room to run around.
