What are your thoughts on this project? I think it would be pretty cool and it might just bring Ogden into the 21st century. :lol8:

It's a very hot topic. It's one of those issues where most of the people are begging for it to happen, but you've got a few beaurocrats opposing it.

If this goes through, Ogden will be the only place in the country where you can fly into the SLC airport, take transit up to Ogden, Ski for the day, and go back to see the Jazz play that same night-- all on public transit.

There will be less visitors driving on the road, because most of the attractions will be available with the transit system. That is a good thing.

I like the idea and should help Ogden's image out. I also like the idea of the resort community tucked up in there accessible only by the gondola, helicoter, or a good set of legs. I do wonder if this gondola is enough to attract Park City type residents and give them the PC like atmosphere that these people are looking for, but I guess PC started out as a mining town, so why couldn't Ogden break on through also.

Is this thing going to cost tax payer's to put in? If so I don't see a huge benefit to the public and if I was a tax payer I wouldn't my taxes going to a gondola, just like I wouldn't want them going to a soccer stadium.

On a similar note I'd love to see Brighton extend down to Heber. It was a hot topic several years ago up here and got shot down. I do think it'll resurface and I'd like to see it happen.

About 8 years ago, the business folk behind 7 peaks were proposing a gondola/train of some sort from Provo up Slate Canyon to a new resort on the front slopes of Provo Peak or somewhere in there. It got shot down, but I thought it was a cool idea. We need a decent resort down here! Sundance blows.

Four major Ski manufacturers have moved to Ogden, based on the possibility of this happening.

It will be a huge boost to Ogden's economy, and will bring a lot more business in. Ogden has been on a rapid decline, and the Ogden mall closing was a kick in the teeth. If this thing goes through, Ogden will be a great place to live again.

As far as cost, the Gondola was less expensive than any other type of transit. Every 30 seconds, an 8 passenger car will come by each stop.

I thought I read that the developer had the funds to foot the bill all by himself if necessary. It is just between the city and the tree huggers. :haha:

Well, I think he's buying the Ogden Golf Course, and Malan's Basin. These will be some of the premier stops on the line.

As for the gondola itself, I think Ogden will pay for that.

I don't know how I stand on the subject. I need to go to Malan's basin before it gets all tore up (there is a geocache there as well) and I have never been there before.

There was once a resort up there anyway, so I guess why not. It aint like we will be able to stop it anyway. I read that Godfrey already went to Switzerland to check out what they have there. Nothing like a paid vacation

Why would Ogden even think that a Gondola would work here Moab, which is a MUCH bigger tourist town than Ogden ever will be has failed twice with the gondola idea.

I had never heard about this? Did they just propose the plan and then it was rejected?

It was only a few year ago that they closed the tram deal up Provo canyon. I don't think I can remember going on it. Prolly when I was a little rugrat. Where did that one go? Did it go over the falls (bridal veil) and stop on top somewhere? I would like to dig up some pictures of that one.

Even though Moab is more of a true tourist town, I think it's a huge stretch to say that Moab is a MUCH bigger tourist town that Ogden. I'm sure Ogden gets a lot more tourist visiting than Moab. Ogden is the closest city to one of the premier ski resorts in the country. Plus the fact that Ogden has it's own population that could support it. Moab doesn't have that. Apples to oranges. Besides, nobody ever wanted to ride a gondola in Moab. Why do that when you could bike/hike/drive to the top, which is most likely the reason you went there in the first place. Ogden, I think would be a totally different situation.
Something that might be a better comparison is Albuquerque. It's been fairly successful.

Moab had that gondola going up to the top of Moab Rim, just on the southwest of town.

I'm not sure why they tore it down, but I don't think it got that much business in the first place.

Ogden's plan, on the other hand, will be used as city transit most of the time, rather than the tourist attraction. The later stages can be used as a tourist attraction, but the original stage will run through the city for transportation.

To answer my own question that I post earlier. Ogden city would pay for the downtown section of the gondola and the developer (Chris Peterson) would pay for the rest. Pretty good deal...I think.

It's supposed to be decent. It's still hidden from the sun pretty much.

But to tourists who continually ski on crap from New York, the snowplowed stuff on my sidewalk is premier.
