East Mountain has one of the steepest hikes of all the Utah county high points, but luckily it's not a very long hike. I hiked this peak solo in August 2004.

I arrived at the "trailhead" (I use this term loosely because there's really no trail) by mid-morning after an easy drive from Price, up Huntington Canyon, and down Miller Flat Road. The hike was indeed steep, and I took a lot of rest breaks, but it really wasn't too bad of a hike. I basically just picked my way around the thickest clusters of trees, and did a lot of switching back and forth.

From the top, I could see Joe's Valley Reservoir to the south and Potter's Ponds to the west. Two geocaches had been placed on top about a week before, and I got first-to-find on both of them. The hike down was almost as slow as the hike up due to the thickness of the trees and the steepness of the slope. I had to take it slow to keep from tumbling all the way down.

I've linked to some of the larger pictures below so the page doesn't scroll horizontally.

About 600' short of the top, looking downhill

View from the same place, looking uphill

One of the survey markers, and a glass summit register jar

Another survey marker and some local artwork

Stickers on my pack after the hike (my shoes and pants were just as bad)

Thanks for the TR Udink, I have added it to the Utah High Pointing Index . I really liked the picture of your gun on the hood of your car. I am not picking a fight, it just struck me as funny.

East Mountain is still on my list to do. I tried in August 2001 to do East, South Tent and Monument in a single weekend. We got caught in some bad weather and barely made it out… but that’s another story.

I would sure like to find a route that uses the old 4WD road that doesn’t require that off trail bushwhack in the High in Utah route.
