I haven't used Skype, but the free version looks pretty similar to Google Talk, which I use occasionally for work. In order to make calls to or receive calls from a regular landline phone using Skype, you have to pay a fee to use their service. Otherwise, any two people using a broadband internet connection can talk through Skype or Google Talk for free.

When I use Google Talk, there's a bit of a delay in the sound reaching the other end, so sometimes it can be awkward. Once I was talking to my manager over both the landline and Google Talk, and the delay was about 1 second through Google Talk.

I have a buddy that works for eBay, who I guess bought out skype. He had nothing but good things to say about it.
