We decided to head up near Golden Spike to look for rabbits. Several people that had planned the trip to Malta, ID bailed out. I have never been to this area and have always wanted to check out the Golden Spike visitor’s center. Unfortunately the visitor’s center was closed. I thought that I would come back on a motorcycle trip and check out the Golden Spike deal.

We had a lead that this area had a potential for rabbits. It was a beautiful day and the weather only required a jacket or less. The first area where we stopped we looked around and saw some coyote tracks but no signs of rabbits. We ate lunch and drove to the second area where we saw many rabbit highways. But no rabbits in sight! We were surprised not to see any after all the tracks that we saw.

The trip ended up being more of a scout mission to check out the area. We shot clay pidgins for a while and drove around surveying the area. Quite a few people around riding four wheelers and doing who knows what. We were surprised to see that many people. Also surprised that they kept these roads plowed all year. We had a good time and I was glad to get out of the house despite not seeing any rabbits. We are going to bring our pistols when we come through on motorcycles. We will make a stop in the summer and walk through a few areas where we saw tracks.

We planed another trip for the summer on our motorcycles. The plan: get dropped off near Snowville. Then ride to Golden Spike on dirt roads and check out the visitor’s center. Then ride west and then south along the edge of the lake towards Wendover. Stay the night in Wendover then take the pony express home the next day. I have not figured the mileage yet. It would be quite a few. There would be lots of historic things to check out along the way. Just a scenic ride to take pictures and survey the area.

Just a tip for the trip from Golden Spike to Wendover...

I did that trek this past summer twice, and it is on HELL of a long deserted stretch of road. Nothing out there, and I mean NOTHING for literally hundreds of miles. In order to make the trip you've gotta get on some railroad maintenance road that runs parallel to some railroad tracks that go from Ogden across the Great Salt Lake and west into Nevada. In a vehicle, if you're prone to car-sickness this road will make you sick. But in a motorcycle could be really cool because there are some cool things along the way that you COULD check out in a truck, but don't because you're so sick of driving. Some good salt flats out there too. You could really go nuts rapping out your speed on those flats out there, they stretch on forever.

Yeah it would be an interesting ride! What possessed you to take that road twice in a truck last summer?

Several things: Curiosity, great photo ops, and there's some old abandoned silver/lead/copper mines out there on the northern tip of the Newfoundland Mountain range.

Searching for rocks huh………… :haha: J/K Yeah it's definitely boonies out there! The last time I was on any of those roads was when we were deer hunting out by Park Valley. Remember? We took that road home just to check it out. A few farm houses is about the only thing I remember. I think it was also dark part of the way. Not an area of the state that you would want to break down.

Man we would have been better off finding a needle in a haystack then any deer on that trip. I think mostly because we didn’t have a clue. Good ole days….. :chairshot:

Any interest in the Wendover trip?
