Beaver & Piute Counties Highest Point, July 4 2003
I first tried climbing this peak in June 2001. Long story short we climb a neighboring peak, Mt Holly, by mistake. One of those hiking lessons learned: always have a topo map when hiking. It took two years before we got another chance. We decided to follow the route described in the book High in Utah with one variation. We would start at the north side of Puffer Lake and hiked in a northeasterly direction over the ridge below Lake Peak. Then we crossed the next drainage and then met up with the Skyline National Recreational Trail. All this off trail is easy as the trees are not thick and most the hike is across meadows. From there we followed the Skyline Trail to somewhere between Mt Holly and Delano. Then hike up to the saddle and up to the peak. My friends didn’t get enough peak bagging in and wanted to climb Holly and Lake on the way back. I being too tired hiked back to the Skyline trail and continued along to where it meets Piute ATV trail #1. My friends collected the cars and drove around and met me at Big John Flat where we camped.
The next day we tried to drive over the pass on ATV trail #1 but the very top of the road was still blocked by snow. So the next day we drove to the town of Junction via Highway 153 then up 89 to Marysvale and back up to #1 from the other side the views were great.
All pictures are from my friend Corrin. |

The Falcon guide, Mountain Biking Utah, has a couple of rides listed in it. I used to have a copy but can’t find it to look up the details. Seems like one of the rides was to start in Big John Flat and ride over the summit we tried to drive over (we were turned back by snow). From the pass it’s downhill all the way to the Fremont Indian State Park on I-70. Seems like one other ride was listed in there that was around Puffer Lake on single track and rides parts of the Skyline Trail. But I am sure there are many trails that are ridable. You should post on the UtahMountainBiking.com forum and see what they think.
There were tons of fishermen around that lake, funny that none ended up in the picture. Also the Beaver River that Highway 153 follows to Puffer Lake is wide and deep. There was plenty of people stream fishing along it. I don’t fish so would know anymore about it than what I told you.
Yeah my license plate ring is awesome. I think it deserves to be on the image bar. How about it accadacca?
