O.K. I am all set on gear, except for a backpack. I have an old small REI pack that will work for the short narrow slots like North Wash. However, for longer wetter stuff I think I will need a new pack. I know that Shane on Climb-Utah recommends 2500-3000 in^3. I also have a grommet kit ready to go.

What packs would you recommend? Is 2500-3000 needed? I usually don't get day packs nearly this big, but I am never carrying ropes, biners and harnesses. Is sil-nylon totally out of the question?

What about this pack?

I am looking for lightweight and comfortable over bombproof. You all have been very helpful. I appreciate your expertise.

2500 - 3000 in^3 is pretty standard for a canyon pack. I use an Imlay Kolob pack, and I highly recommend it. See here for more details:

The Kolob pack has a 40 liter capacity (2500 in^3), and is plenty of room for pretty much everything I need to take with me in the canyons. It's extremely comfortable too - I hardly feel the weight of the pack.

If you wanna get into the doing the longer canyons that require camping out inside the canyon (ie Heaps, Buckskin Gulch, etc) you'll want a pack that is 50 Liters (or 3000 in^3) in order to carry tent, sleeping gear, etc. - depending on how much stuff you pack. I could probably stuff all the required camping gear into my Kolob Pack because I pack pretty light. Your Mileage May Vary.
