look in the Earthwork link.
What crap! I though dumping 55gal barrels of glue on the ground was an environmental disaster, stupid me its really art. The spiral jetty is an eyesore. Reminds me of the "Tree of Utah".

I don't think this quite falls into the same category as the stupid tree. It's out of the way (you actually have to want to go there in order to see it), and it's nowhere near as obtrusive as the tree. |

| I kinda dig the tree. A groovy little surprise as you drive through a bunch of nothingness. |

sounds to me like you're picking a fight for the sake of fighting...?
you seem to be awfully combative lately James, you need a hug?
i wonder if you're putting to much into it. often times "artists" and i use that term loosely, place their work to engage people into a dialog about either the piece of work, the surrounding environment or both. they are there for comment. and if it didn't affect you in some way, we would not be discussing your reaction to it now. your reaction and opinion is part of the experience too.
now don't you feel used...you were part of a "hippy art experience" ewww :lol8: |

I don't like the Utah Tree but I like the Spiral Jetty....... that's what art is, some you like, some you don't.......
I really enjoy the rock art in the salt flats along side the road as you drive to Bendover. Yup.... mostly its just trash but some people are very creative with how they arrange their trash  |

You know I get that a lot. I am just stating my opinion. I guess my matter of fact way of putting things can come across as me trying to be mean. My feeling is people in this forum try too hard to craft their posts in a way that couldn’t possibly offend anyone. I think we are all adults here and should have thicker skin. To put it more PC, I am sorry if my post was seen as an attack on you or anyone else.
Couldn’t we all use more hugs? Maybe I am a little on edge lately. I think it’s the spring fever. Maybe as the weather gets better the forum topics will shift from homophobia and penis size to trip reports and all things outdoors. (I know, I know, don’t read it if it doesn’t interest you. But its like a car wreck, I can’t turn away.)

I get what you’re saying. I understand it is placed to evoke comments about it and its surroundings.
But to continue the dialog about the work and its surroundings… I feel the West Deserts of Utah get a bad wrap. A lot of people see them as a barren, empty waste land were it is ok to put up art to evoke dissuasion about the surroundings. But I ask do you think anyone (for the sake of argument) would build a giant concrete tree (or swirl of rocks) on the side of the highway leading into Moab or off the side of the Mirror Lake Highway. I don’t think it would for the reason that most people would see it as an eyesore in those “more” beautiful settings.
I think the west desert is great. I think the barren emptiness is what gives it its beauty. It should be admired for what it is, not disliked for what it isn’t.
That’s the end of my art-chat for the day,
James |
