| my first guess without handling it and ph testing would also be gypsum. trona is much more crystalline. this looks like it would flake off in sheets. i've seen similar deposits up here in SW WY but you'd have to do some testing to be absolutely sure. :ne_nau: |

My vote was for Gypsum until you said that you cannot scratch it with a fingernail. Gypsum is easily scratched with a fingernail.
My next guess would be possibly calcite. Quartz has a different "look" to it than the rock in your photo.
See if you can scratch it with a nail. If it scratches easily in one direction with a nail, it's likely calcite.
