I bet some of you dimwit's are expecting an "I remember when topic". :haha:

145 years ago today, at just about this hour, day one of the battle of Gettysburg was winding down. General Robert E. Lee, despite his own orders not to engage any Union troops until all his corps were in position, had committed 27,000 of his soldiers against 22,000 Union forces. As the general fighting ended this day Lee had suffered over 6,500 casualties, killed, wounded and missing, and Northern commanders had suffered 9,300 casualties, killed, wounded and missing. Although Lee had carried the day and taken the town, the Union troops had retreated to the high ground south of the town to form defensive positions. The battle would rage for two more days.

At the same time, the siege of Vicksburg culminated in the surrender of Confederate forces to General Grant on July 4, 1863. Gettysburg is widely seen as the turning point of the war, but the capture of Vicksburg gave the Union almost complete control of the Mississippi, a major victory in its own right. Not many people today even recognize the name "Battle of Vicksburg".

Standing in the field trying to imagine the whole thing made my skin crawl.
Trying to imagine standing there loading a musket, hoping to get it done before someone blew my brains out was very disturbing.

thanks for the fix.

and just to bring this somewhat back to topic:

Canadians at Gettysburg
Forty-nine Canadians served in the 24th Michigan and saw action at McPherson's Woods on July 1st. Over half of them were killed, wounded or captured in the day's fighting. Three men, all from New Brunswick, died while defending Little Round Top on July 2nd as members of the 20th Maine, including: Alexander Lester, age 18, Aaron Adams, age 27, and George Leach, age 25. In all, at least two dozen Canadians are known to have been killed or wounded as a result of the three days at Gettysburg.
