On my morning run today I noticed SAR staging area and watched the helicopter take off from Oakridge Elementary and search the north fork of Neff's Canyon.

Four hikers and their dog spent the night on Mt. Olympus after they became stuck on a rocky ledge Sunday.

Deputies say the group set out hiking up Neff’s Canyon around 11 a.m. Sunday morning, but by 7:30 p.m., they ended up on a ledge in an area that became too difficult for them to continue.

The hikers were able to call for help and a DPS helicopter located them.

Rescuers lowered supplies down to the group but because of the late hour and the difficult terrain, officials decided to wait until morning to assist the hikers down the mountain.

“Our team that hiked in from the trail head is just below them and after first light we'll send in another team and bring them off the mountain,” said Lt. Brent Atkinson, Salt Lake County sheriff's office.

None of hikers were injured. Officials remind everyone to always be prepared while hiking and don't go into areas that exceed your skill level.

I don't have any reason to suspect this, but would like to think it's true: SAR lets the people know they are going to be rescued, but allows them to spend the night on a ledge to strengthen the lesson. :lol8:
