The weather is supposed to be about 100 degrees this weekend would you suggest taking a wetsuit for the black hole?

I was talking to a friend today and he said he was down at the black hole Saturday and was told there was a log jam preventing passage through the black hole. Can this new log jam be confirmed or is this just in reference to the 2003 log jam that has already washed out? I was going to go next weekend and it would be nice to know beforehand. Thanks in advance.

as of a month ago there were no log jams in sight.
it's possible that's changed, but i'd say your "friends" beta is old.

I was going to point you to my TR, but Marc already did so. Thanks Marc!

Although, there was definitely a log jam that formed just before Memorial weekend. Your guess is as good as mine if it's still there, but I'd go assuming it is. It was right near the start of the hole, and is detailed in my trip report. I think it was a great example of what log jams are, but didn't think it was too bad to push through. (It's at the start, so you are still fresh.) I'd recommend folks stick close together, that way, only the front person needs to exert a lot of energy to make a path. Of course, send a strong scout in first, and he needs to make sure there is still an escape. Then, when it's safe, everyone else should drop in and follow close to the leader of that pack... Have a blast!

Take care,
A.J.

The one nice thing about the Black Hole is that if you reach an obstacle that is too difficult for your group you just turn around and hike out the way you came. You should never become "trapped" in the Black Hole.

I always suggest a wetsuit for the Black Hole.
