Friday evening May 30, met up with the FNG’s in the North Wash area to descend some Irish canyons. An Irishman once said "A person without a Shillelagh is a person without an expedient." To expedite the expedient [?] we started the evening off with a romp thru the east fork of Shillelagh. We ended up descending the lower narrows in the dark. Never done that before - very cool! - safer than it sounds. Shillelagh is a pleasant canyon with a short approach, a big rappel and some easy lower narrows.
Saturday morning May 31 found us heading off to the West fork of Blarney canyon. Blarney has a tempting blend of features to satisfy most canyoneering spirits. It has the same easy approach as Shillelagh, a nice rappel into the canyon, plenty of down climbing, a deep crack entrance into a dark hall and long cool narrows. We used webbing for the short rappel\down climbs. Thanks to Brittany. we found the rumored skull and crossbones “KEAP OWT“ engraving a few hundred feet down from the last down climb (the one with the choke stone and pool at the bottom (pool was dry)).
Saturday Afternoon May 31. Continuing our Irish canyon blast we headed over to the next drainage and up a ridge to the top of the west fork of Leprechaun canyon. A steady breeze kept the hot climb tolerable and made no-show-ums out of the biting no-see-ums. WF Leprechaun is a step up from Blarney. It has plenty of short rappels, down climbs, tight squeezes and the infamous Belfast Boulevard with its long, narrow, slanted and dark hallway. We used webbing for the shorter rappel\down climbs. Webbing rigs and runs thru figure eights and pirahanas very well. It could be my imagination or, Leprechauns playing their usual tricks, but Belfast Boulevard seems different every time I go thru it. The dark crawl/climb thru is never the same as it was the last time I visited it. I think that large rock fall in the boulevard is shifting on a regular basis.
Sunday morning June 1. For a final Irish splash we drove up the road to the top of right fork of Leprechaun. Less severe and not as tight as the left fork, but no less entertaining , the right fork has 4 rappels, great narrows, dips into dry potholes and a scenic last rappel . I love the Irish canyons. |
