| Looking for an easy half day jaunt to start off our weekend canyoneering trip, we decided on Arscenic in Poison Spring. The temps were in the high 80’s but a pleasant breeze made for a comfortable hike across the sands. Ascenic lives up to its name. It is a beautiful canyon. The early morning sun cast some great light off the high soaring walls. We decided to use the “do it with one rope, do it all at once, leave the rope and retrieve it on our way back” method to tackle the three stage 165 foot entrance rappel. A 200 foot rope rigged from the top just touches the bottom. Pulling it from the top was easy. Except for a couple of small wet sections, the canyon was dry. Like most canyons in the area during late spring and summer, the walls of the canyon had dozens of blue bellies scurrying along at all angles. |
