A big liter of Mtn Dew!

Well, that, and.... :haha:

Actually, fat is energy. It doesn't "explode" like carbs/sugar, or caffeine, but it's a more steady source of energy, and it doesn't peak you out or make you dive. That's the whole concept of the atkins diet, is to reduce the carbs, but fat is still ok.

Other diets we know, will reduce the fat, and you'll see that any "light" or "fat free" product will have an increased amount of carbs.

for those thinking about carbs, fats, and stuff ... just keep in mind that your brain cells normally consume glucose for energy ... and these come from carbohydrates.

you want to maintain a sufficient level of glucose in your bloodstream so that your brain functions well, but not so high that insulin is secreted causing a sweeping removal of glucose from the bloodstream. complex carbohydrates are ideal on both fronts (unlike refined carbohydrates and sugars which tend to cause rapid spikes in glucose proportional to the amount consumed).

My rule of thumb when choosing food: the closer it is to coming from the source or origin, the better off for my body. :2thumbs:

If I had some carbs to help me think, I'd know what that meant. :haha:

But anyways, the magic question is.... How many grams of carbs a day does your brain need?

I bet that depends on body weight and other factors but this was interesting:

generally speaking i agree with you, but quantity is a major issue when it comes to sugars. case in point, fruit juice. there is a HUGE difference between eating an orange in a period of 5 minutes and drinking a large glass of fruit juice. in many ways it shares the same problems as drinking sugared sodas in the way your body responds to it.

Yes this is true! I'm a HUGE fan of H2O........moderation is key with anything and Americans wayyyyyyyy over consume. If we do have juice in my house, it's usually a Naked juice or Odwalla and one small container is about 4 servings for my kids. My personal weakness = coffee. At least I do organic, fair trade. HAHA!! I'm a fan of eating as clean as possible.....whole foods, etc.. I am part of our local Co-op where I can get locally, organic grown foods for less.

That was interesting, but I still could not find any gauge for comparison on a normal healthy carb intake for the brain, say for a 150 lb man, 18 years of age?

Maybe I need to eat more carbs to understand it.

cool. when consuming sugars like that it's really good to simultaneously consume fats and proteins to temper the blood sugar spikes

* oops screwed up that quote!

This information is hard to find but I have found this from a Velonews article: "Under normal conditions at rest, your brain and nervoussystem require a minimum of 150 grams of glucose daily."

Article link: http://www.velonews.com/article/13178

Now the search is on for a carb to glucose ratio calcualtion.

EDIT: Found this one but it does not use weight just height & body type.
