Good morning -- I figured with the new Bogley format I might post a brief trail report from Virginia.

This weekend did a fantastic 12-13 miler along the Appalachian Trail from McAffee's Knob to Tinker Cliffs just West of Roanoke. We had great weather: A cool morning, warmish sunny midday, and light rain during the final "burn" at the end of the trail.

If you do the route, you'll need to drop a shuttle car, and I'd highly recommend making the run starting from the McAffee end. Otherwise, there's some just nasty pulls.

McAffee and Tinker are both large rock outcrops with amazing views of the mountains and valleys of the region. The trail, being the AT, is well-traveled and no advanced route finding skills are involved. The whole hike is a ridge. Summertime is probably not the best, since the views will be cut off.

The end of the hike involves a two mile tramp through some spectacular Appalachian glades cut with two strong-running creeks. There are lots of big sycamore trees and lush bogs.

I've included a generic photo I found on the web since I opted not to bring my camera.
