I got an e-mail on Friday that the Canyon Country 4x4 Club was going to do a trail ride into the Moquith Mountains on Saturday. The trail head is located off Hancock Rd which runs off Rt 89 just North of Kanab.

We ended up with just four vehicles due to the short notice. We started out following a sandy track that takes you behind Coral Pink Sand Dunes.
We followed this to the second left which takes you down into Water Canyon. Steep and rocky in parts, sandy in others. We eventually crossed Water Canyon and climbed up to a parking area for a really neat Pictograph site. (I think I've seen Tanya and Bo post this site) . We took some pictures and had a lunch break.

Instead of climbing back out Water Canyon we came up a trail called Hell Dive and then proceed out to two very neat view points. Again. rocky in places and definitely sandy. No real exposure but a couple of narrow ridges, off camber with steep drop offs. Not my favorites.

This was a great ride with just enough obstacles to keep it interesting. I would not recommend the Water Canyon/Hell Dive trails without a guide.
The main loop trail for the Moquith Mountains is easily doable with some caution. We ended up driving for about 5 1/2 hours and covered about 25 miles. My Jeep got a lifetimes worth of pin striping!

The BLM is looking to close this area down to vehicles and it would be a shame.

The alcove with the pictographs is right below that patch of snow:

The Batman is always one of my favorites:

We stopped at this area/viewpoint, incredible:

The Zuke belongs to a fellow from St George and he can really wheel that critter. He's got a Rubicon, too, but loves the Zuke. There was a washout in one place and he had that almost on it's side numerous times. I should've been taking pictures.

Come on down sometime, Acca. The club is hosting a Spring ride out Kanab in early June. They'll run several different trails, scenic on up.
