The ginger bread men were dope. :2thumbs: Exactly it is their haka not BYU, nor Hawaii Warriors, or high school football.
The Haka is a Maori warrior dance. The ALL BLACKS performed the Haka in a rugby union match back in 1884 and have ever since then. Most of the time the All Blacks perform the "Ka Mate" Haka. Traditionally it is believed the “Ka Mate” arose as a wily plan to defeat the aims of an enemy.
In consultation with Maori elders and chiefs the ALL BLACKS introduced a new Haka, "Kapa o Pango." This new version has some controversy because it has a point at opponent and a thought slash. Maori claim it represents drawing in vital energy into the heart and lungs.
The ALL BLACKS have permission to perform the Haka from the tribes that helped them form their own dance. Other Polynesian Rugby playing teams from Tonga, Samoa, Fiji perform their native warrior dance from their culture.
Other teams have tried to answer the intimidation and/or disrespect the Haka. In 1989 Ireland’s rugby team locked arms and entered the ALL Black’s circle. The two captains then got into a shoving match. France did the same this year. Both Ireland and France won. A stadium of 107K in Australia sang “Waltzing Matilda” as the Haka was performed. Australia went on to win that match.
But most of the time teams respectfully watch. Tradition has it that if a team disrespects the Haka they then go on to louse the match. England’s captain got into a shoving match with the All Blacks captain, lose. Australia once practiced warm up drills, lose. Another time they turned their backs to them, lose. Historically it has been bad luck to disrespect the All Black’s Haka.
There is a question on whether if BYU, Hawaii Warriors, high school teams are infringing upon copy right or intellectual property. Since then Hawaii has changed some of their Haka to include more Hawaiian culture, moves, steps, actions, and chants. I believe the BYU Haka is an exact copy of “ka mate” but it was started by a Maori player and grandson of a Maori chief. Clearly it was his culture. |

Ireland's responce to the Haka
Samoa "siva tau"
Tonga's "Sipi Tau" a version of Kailao. I posted a version earlier where All Blacks and Tonga went at it at the same time with their respective warior dances.
Fijian "Cibi"
Ohio State dots the "i", Tennessee spreads the "T", the island nations have their warrior dances, and the All Blacks have the Haka. The Haka is truly one of the greatest sporting traditions. |

I love the All Blacks Haka. Great tradition.
We recently had Air New Zealand start flying into Vancouver (direct flight from Aukland - 14 hours in a B777!). On the inaugural departure, we watched them prepare to take off. They approached the runway and stopped. A fellow I work with (a Kiwi) said they were doing the Haka on the flight deck. You know, I could just about see it... |
