Trip Report – Not Mind Bender

Location: Not Mind Bender – Robbers Roost, Utah, United States, Earth.

Date: October 15, 2005

Group: Jason Price, Sam and Masiel Gregory, Jami Snyder

These two are BFF, that’s for sure.

Sam

Equipment: Two 100’ canyoneering ropes, Shoes, socks, the usual stuff, mountain bike, helmets, piranhas, etc.

Time: Trailhead – 9:15, other trailhead – 3:30 and another 15-20 minutes for the mountain bike ride. 6 and ½ hours total.

Notes:

This was Jami’s first experience canyoneering and oh what a good one it was. I thought this canyon was almost as difficult as Alcatraz. The skinny parts weren’t quite as long, but they were difficult and it was very very muddy. At first, the canyon seems as dull as Mind Bender, but it slots up nicely after the junction of the forks and is just absolutely beautiful. This canyon is the king of down climbing and wedging yourself between sandstone walls.

This canyon is absolutely beautiful in a lot of places. One of my favorites.

There are parts of this canyon where you can avoid most of the waist deep wading by stemming high, but it’s exhausting to do this, and I’d say most people would be better off just sloshing through. The water was pretty gross in most of the pools, but bearable.

!!!! If you are going to do this canyon, your gear will get just as hammered as it would in Alcatraz. It’s very skinny and involves nearly constant down climbing in the narrow parts. Plan on raspberries and trashed gear when you get out. !!!!

The exit was great. I ran up most of the slick rock and rode my bike back to the truck. I almost got the truck back to the exit by the time everyone else got out. They barely beat me.
We went to Ray’s in Green River, where we happened to bump into Rockskicowboy and Eric and their crew returning from their North Wash adventures. After some delicious burgers and fries (Yes, I am plugging for Ray’s. I love that place.) we headed home.

Jami not being smart at the last rappel.

She’s a fox when she ditches those glasses.

The end.

Yowza!! Looks like you had an awesome weekend!! I love Not Mindbender - it's in my top five list. Always better when hot chicks come along. :2thumbs:

Hey what's the anchor situation like for that final rap? When I was there earlier this year, it was FUBAR. Check it out:

Has the anchor situation improved?

Yeah, it's greatly improved. I wish i would have taken a picture. Well. . . the bolt has improved. That same rope and piece of webbing that go back to the cam are still there. The rockpile is gone. (Why didn't they bury it??) It seemed safe enough to me. I don't like bolts, and I don't trust bolts, but the one that is there now is pretty well placed. There is a blowout hole from the old bolt. We all made it down.

Nice pics dudes, thats funny that we saw you guys at Ray's. Ben and Josh wouldn't stop raving about Ray's our entire North Wash trip, they were afraid I would be dissapointed, but luckily it was everything they talked it up to be, thick burgers and greasy greasy fries! Our North Wash trip was awesome, we did ***cough***, Boss Hog, The Black Hole, and Monkey Business (Kelsey calls it the west fork of butlers west fork I think). A great time had by all. I'm sure Ben will write up a TR so I don't have to... ok I'll try and write one up when I get a chance. Josh was the photographer, but when I get my hands on his pics, I will write up a photo TR and post it for ya'alls enjoyment.

Eric.

PS You guys decide if you are going to attempt Choprock still or something else? Sure wish I could go, maybe next time.
