Hello All,
After spending the past nearly ten years in the sub-arctic frontier of south-central Alaska :snowcloud:, I have returned home to the great Beehive State. :amazon: Wow, what is all this crazy bright stuff here? :ne_nau: Oh yeah, I remember...LIGHT!!! My goodness, sunshine in the winter... :snowguy: Wow; this will take some getting use to. I think I like it though.
Born and raised in the "Top of Utah" (hey, I didn't make that up!), more specifically Clinton, a small (yet feverishly growing) suburb between Clearfield and Ogden. Dang, there's even a Wall-Mart here now!?! :eek2: Anyway, although Alaska is a very nice place to visit, it's really great to finally be back home.
I graduated from Northridge High in '94, and Weber State in '99 (BS in Geology :2thumbs:). I'm fairly deep into photography and anything involving the outdoors; if you want to see some of what I saw in Alaska you can check it out here. I used to be into all kind of crazy activities, such as ice climbing, rock climbing, hiking, biking, camping, running, snowshoeing, ATVing, snow machining, and lots of other things I can't even remember anymore, but a serious back injury several years ago has taken a serious bite out of what I can do anymore. But I still love to get out and see as much of the beautiful outdoors as I can.
I found this site by seeing a fantastic post on the photo site Fred Miranda, from Bogley member/moderator CarpeyBiggs. (You can see that posting both here and on Bogley HERE.
Anyway, I was thrilled to find such a wonderful site as this existed, and signed up immediately. Not exactly sure yet how active I will be participating in discussions, but I will most definitely be lurking around :peepwall: and envying all the fun and exciting things that you all are doing. Hopefully someday I will be able to do them (again) too.
Well I think I've droned on for long enough :blahblah: so I'll sign off now. I look forward to possibly meeting some of you sometime. :wedgie:
'Til Then, Cheers Folks! :wavey:
Scott

Welcome!
I don't know how people can live in Alaska in the winter. I would go crazy. During the summer would be awesome though. Another photographer is always welcome, we are getting to have quite the group of photographers on here. I can only dream of taking those kinds of pics. Your site is awesome, I will definitely pass some time at work on there.

Thank you much Mooseman! Hey, I like your knick-name (in Alaska knick would be pronounced ka nik for some strange reason :ne_nau: ). I used to have moose in my yard just about every day up there  . They loved to eat the raspberry bushes and whatever they could strip off the trees :frustrated: ...
Thanks again for the welcome! |

Wow, what are the odds for running into a fellow Clintonian? :2thumbs: I took a look at the myspace page; sweet video. I'm glad that kid that took a header was ok :eek2:
Thanks for the greeting. Maybe we'll run into each other at the local Wall-Mart or something! :five: |

Hey there Jaxx, thanks for the welcome. Yeah, Alaskan winters can be tough. The only real benefit (to me at least) is having regular aurora photo ops, and having all the eagles congregate around condensed food source areas. Oh sure, some crazy people like to go skiing and snowshoeing and snow machining and such :cold: , but the only thing that I would do anymore in the -10 degree bleak days is get out of the truck for 20 minutes to watch and photograph the eagles... Oh yeah, the summers are beyond awesome though... :cool2: Thanks for the kind words about my photo website. I think I may have to change the name though, and just have a separate section for Alaska. Hopefully I'll be flooding it with a smörgåsbord of Utah photos soon!
As for my back...that's kind of a long, sad, frustrating and depressing story; I am not adverse to sharing it, but I'll recommend that those who can not tolerate watching someone slowly dying in front of them to not proceed... Short version: After doing all the crazy things that I've done in my life it was just a quick ride down a long set of icy stairs :dizzy: that got me. Diagnosis: a few bulging, herniated, and ruptured discs (one pretty bad in the low back), as well as nerve damage and sciatica that has turned my left leg into an aching, burning mess of weak (and shriveling) jello :kboom: . Oh, and a bunch of torn ligaments in the vertebrate joints, which seem to LOVE to constantly slip here, there, and everywhere... Some of it could probably be fixed a bit with surgery, but there's a huge nasty snag with the people calling the shots: the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Workers' Compensation Program (OWCP). Yep, the injury happened on the job with the Federal government. If you have heard about any problems with the regular, state run workers' comp., the federal system is much, MUCH worse. A bunch of bumbling bureaucrats whose one and only goal is to throw you out of the system as quickly as possible, with as little or no medical treatment as possible. :ban: They even hire quacks who can't get any other work to do phony exams and say that there's nothing wrong. They make all their own rules, and when those don't suit them they just change them. I've had congressional inquiries opened that have accomplished absolutely nothing. :frustrated: Anyway, to make a short version of a long story even shorter (too late :blahblah: )...it has been absolutely hell on earth from the start, over four years ago... :becca:
So now are you sorry you asked? :slobber1: Don't feel bad though - that's MY job... :haha:
Thanks for asking, and for the nice welcome. |
