I have a question for you computer geeks..... As you know I use htaccess to password part of the climb-utah website.

Anyhoo.... When one of my members attempts to log in he hits the "Members Enter Here" button and immediately gets the 404 error message. He is never presented with a box to enter his password, the browser jumps directly to the 404 error.

Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?

Any idea what browser they are using? I just tried it and it worked fine for me. That tells me htaccess is setup correctly.

Also, have them go directly to this and see what they get? http://www.climb-utah.com/pr/

I really don't know why only one of your members would have that problem. It would make me think the error was on his side. It could be his cookie, internet, or personal settings. It may be helpful to have him try with IE and Firefox.

If it is on your end, you may want to check your redirect. Here is a website tutorial if you are having any troubles with it:

I'm 99.9% sure it's on his side because he is the only one with the problem. If it's a problem on my side I get about a dozen emails an hour.

I'm having him try a few more things.... thanks for the ideas to date.

Shane, it's also could be as simple as spyware on his computer hijacking his http sessions.

Also have him go directly to the file and see if he gets a pop up:

http://www.climb-utah.com/pr/index.htm

If he can't pull that up, then I'd look at pop up blockers on his comp.

Good call, I'm betting on a spyware hijacking.

I'll let you know what happens.

Browser would be helpful, if its aol you own your own :eek2:
Any toolbars? Maybe a crazy pop up blocker....
ask the user to hold ctrl and then click on it .. what happens that same thing?
Can we get the full 404 error

No login box?

That is correct. The broswer skips the login box and jumps directly to the generic 404 page.

Can we get the full 404 error

Authorization Required
This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I get the same error if in click cancel on the login box. Have we tried holding Ctrl and clicking it yet?
Any word on that browser?
Has it worked for this person before?

Problem solved. It was his security setting. Here was the problem:

Internet Explorer
Windows XP

Tools>Internet Options>Security Settings>Custom Levels> Down at the very bottom of list it says 'prompt for password'. His was set to 'anonymous logon'. Had to change option to 'prompt for.....'

Thanks for all your help. :2thumbs:
